Recommended Books
Even if you search for terms such as “onomatopoeia,” “mimetic words,” or “sound-symbolic words” in Japanese, the number of readily available books is surprisingly limited. Many of the books that do exist are ambitious and interesting, although older publications sometimes contain expressions that can feel dated to younger readers.
The recommendations below preserve the categories and personal comments used on the original site.
Dictionaries / For Adults
小野正弘編『擬音語・擬態語4500 日本語オノマトペ辞典』小学館、2007年
Together with Yamaguchi Nakami’s dictionary below, these are the two dictionaries I would start with. Both are relatively recent, and both authors are major figures in the field.
山口仲美編『擬音語・擬態語辞典』講談社（講談社学術文庫）、2015年
This one is especially approachable: it includes examples drawn from manga and is available as an inexpensive paperback.
For Children
佐藤有紀『「感じ」が伝わるふしぎな言葉 擬音語・擬態語ってなんだろう』少年写真新聞社（ちしきのもり）、2018年
As the title suggests, this book answers the basic question “What are mimetic and onomatopoeic words?” in a way elementary-school children can understand while still covering the important academic ideas.
髙野紀子『日本語オノマトペのえほん』あすなろ書房、2020年
A full-color picture book that lets even preschool-age children enjoy Japanese onomatopoeia. There are surprisingly few onomatopoeia books aimed at very young children.
An Easy Introduction

A good choice if you want a casual overview of Japanese onomatopoeia as a whole.
