HYOKKO-RI ひょっこり

Describes a person, thing, or event appearing unexpectedly and rather lightly, often from somewhere you did not expect.
Examples
A horsetail shoot is poking its head up unexpectedly.
5年前に家出をした息子が、ひょっこり自宅に顔を出したかと思ったら、 お金を持ち出してすぐに出て行ってしまった。
My son, who had run away from home five years earlier, suddenly showed up at the house, took some money, and disappeared again.
つくしがひょっこり顔を出している。
Dogmatic Opinion
Perhaps because of HYOKO-HYOKO—small, light, hopping movements—I picture something suddenly emerging from an unexpected place.
I would not normally use HYOKKO-RI for my own deliberate action. The comedian Hyokkorihan is, naturally, a special case.
If I unexpectedly meet an acquaintance somewhere after a long time, that is not necessarily HYOKKO-RI either. BATTA-RI is more natural for a chance encounter.
With HYOKKO-RI, I feel that the other person or thing suddenly enters my field or territory from their side.
