Meanings

Describes a body, structure, or construction that is solid, sturdy, strongly built, and not easily shaken or broken.

Examples

   ラグビーをやりはじめてからがっしりした体つきになってきた。

A sturdily constructed lattice.

    がっしりと組み合わされた格子

Dogmatic Opinion

For body type, a bodybuilder is not what I picture when I hear GASSHI-RI.

I think more of an American-football or rugby player, or in boxing, perhaps a welterweight or middleweight fighter. The focus is not simply on visible muscle mass. What matters more is the impression of a thick, strong underlying frame—almost a sense of being big-boned.

The same idea extends to objects and structures: the parts feel substantial and the whole thing looks difficult to shake or break.

Proximate Expression

stocky

sturdy

solid

strong/tough constitution/structure

For Japanese Learners

Solidly built, sturdy, robust, strongly built, and powerfully built are useful translations. For people, muscular alone is too narrow: GASSHI-RI can emphasize the strength and solidity of the entire frame rather than conspicuous muscles.
