Dogmatic Opinion

For me, KICCHI-RI is less about the physical image of “no gaps” than about doing what ought to be done properly and completely.

Taking responsibility KICCHI-RI presupposes that someone in a position of responsibility has failed and is now expected to fulfill that obligation properly. Closing a door KICCHI-RI likewise implies a situation in which the door is supposed to be fully closed with no gap.

Suppose I am reluctantly dragged to a wedding after-party and then say, “They charged me KICCHI-RI 10,000 yen.” The important point need not be mathematical exactness—10,000 rather than 9,999 or 10,001 yen. The stronger implication may be that although I had been invited and half-expected to get in free, they duly collected the full 10,000-yen participant fee from me as if it were simply my obligation.

Even the numerical sense often carries the feeling that matching the target exactly is desirable or required.

Compared with SHIKKA-RI, SHIKKA-RI feels broader and less specific. KICCHI-RI gives me an image of a goal that could be measured, weighed, checked, or scored.

If my wife tells me, “Set the dishes on the table SHIKKA-RI,” I am not quite sure what standard I am supposed to meet. If she tells me to arrange them KICCHI-RI, I immediately feel nervous, as though I must pay meticulous attention to every detail of their placement and even how the designs line up.

For Japanese Learners

Exactly and precisely work for numbers, divisions, and times; properly, thoroughly, or meticulously for duties and work; neatly or tightly for physical arrangement. The common idea is that nothing is vague, misaligned, incomplete, or carelessly left undone. Unlike KIKKA-RI, which can focus simply on exact numerical identity, KICCHI-RI often carries a stronger sense of meeting a required standard.
