PYOKKO-RI ぴょっこり
Meanings
A rare expression similar to HYOKKO-RI, describing something appearing unexpectedly but with an added light, springy, hopping quality.
Examples
At the school play, my daughter suddenly appeared from the wings with a little jump.
学芸会で娘が舞台袖からぴょっこりジャンプしながら登場してきた。
Dogmatic Opinion
There are almost no occasions when I would actually use this word.
The PYO sound strongly reminds me of PIYO-PIYO, the chirping of a chick, so I picture a small creature hopping lightly.
Add the element of “suddenly appearing,” and you get something like the example sentence.
My impression is basically HYOKKO-RI plus a jump—the toddler version.

For Japanese Learners
Pop out, pop up, appear with a little hop, and spring into view may fit. PYOKKO-RI is close to HYOKKO-RI but adds a playful bouncing quality. It is rare, so learners mainly need to understand the sound-image rather than actively use it.
