PAKKA-RI ぱっかり
Meanings
Describes a mouth, hole, crack, or split opening very wide, or a rounded object splitting broadly into two.
Examples
If you fall into a crevasse gaping wide open, it’s all over.
ぱっかりとひらいたクレヴァスに転落したらおしまいだ。
Pull the string and the ceremonial kusudama ball splits open.
紐を引っ張ると、くす玉がぱっかり割れます。
Crack the egg neatly open.
卵を手際よくぱっかりと割る。
Dogmatic Opinion
I picture a rounded thing splitting symmetrically into left and right halves without being completely severed into two independent pieces.
That is why a mouth, a ceremonial ball, an egg, or a large opening feels natural: the original whole opens dramatically but its two sides still belong to the same basic structure.

For Japanese Learners
Wide open, split open, crack open, and gape open may fit. Compared with a simple “open,” PAKKA-RI makes the opening broad and visually conspicuous, often with two sides spreading apart.
