Meanings
1. Describes opening the mouth very wide, or taking something into the mouth in one large bite.
2. Describes a crack, wound, or split opening up widely and conspicuously.

Dogmatic Opinion
The primary image seems to be the mouth opening wide—an intensified version of PAKURI—and from there the expression extends naturally to cracks and wounds.
But I feel there is something more than simple separation.
The thing was originally one whole. It has split or opened, yet the two sides still look as though they might somehow be brought back together and closed again.
A wound gaping PAKKU-RI is alarming precisely because you can still perceive the original unbroken form that ought to be restored.
