POKKA-RI  ぽっかり

Meanings

① To float lightly in the air, on the surface of the water, in the mind, etc., .

② A large hole or cavity, like an open mouth.

     Also used for psychological metaphors.

Examples

① There is a cloud/moon floating in the sky.

      ぽっかりと空に雲/月が浮かんでいる。

② My wife’s death has left a gaping hole in my heart, and I have no motivation to do anything.

  妻が死んで、心にぽっかりと穴が空(あ)いてしまって、何もやる気が起きない。

Dogmatic Opinion

Personally, I use “Pokkari” the most in “a hole or vacant” as in ②.

If someone says something like, “The moon is “Pokkari” floating in the sky,”

it seems poetic and sentimental.

We focus on the circular state with no corners, as associated with holes or clouds, the moon, etc.

Pokkari also has the meaning of “comfortable warmth (poka-poka).

This may also be somewhat reminiscent of a radiant ball of warm air.

Proximate Expression

float

hole
