GIKKU-RI  ぎっくり

Meanings

① Same as “Gikuri.”

The state of being caught off-guard and momentarily upset, surprised, or afraid.

② The sound made when a joint is moved.

Uesd in “Gikkuri-Goshi (acute low back pain)”.

Examples

① I was taken aback when my wife said to me, “You’re hiding money between the books.”

「本の間にお金隠しているでしょ」と妻に言われて、ぎっくりした。

② I had an acute low back pain when I lifted something heavy.

  重いものを持ち上げたらぎっくり腰になった。

Dogmatic Opinion

In terms of frequency of use, “Gikkuri-Goshi(lower back)” is used more frequently.

However, in fact, there should be no such sound as a “Gikkuri”.

“Gokkit” “Gukkit” “Pikkit” “Pakki” ?

① and ② seem to be completely different,

It is a common uninvited shock that comes unexpectedly and out of the blue.

It seems to me that you could describe it as “Bikkuri Goshi”,

The word “Gikkuri” nicely expresses the meaning of “unexpected,” “joint-related,” and “bad.”

Proximate Expression

 taken aback
