CHAKKA-RI  ちゃっかり

Meanings

A person who behaves shrewdly, is to the point, and is greedy to take advantage of (gain) something that only he or she can take advantage of.

Examples

・My daughter said she was “too full” and left the salad, but ate the ice cream for dessert.

娘は「おなかがいっぱい」と言ってサラダは残したのに、 デザートのアイスクリームをちゃっかり食べている。

・He has not paid a penny, yet he rides in the car as a matter of course.

1円も払っていないのに、ちゃっかり車に同乗している。

Dogmatic Opinion

Several dictionaries explain it as “shrewd, to the point, but somehow impossible to hate.”

However, it is possible to hate a “Chakkari” person with all your heart.

It is also difficult to explain “shrewd” and “to the point.”

But in essence, the question is “Why you?” in the sense of “You are receiving the benefit even though there is much doubt about your eligibility (right) to receive it in the first place.

It is totally hateful.

Proximate Expression
