BOKKI-RI  ぼっきり

Meanings

The state of something hard and firm breaking violently.

Examples

・The bat was snapped off by Otani’s powerful fastball.

大谷投手の豪速球でバットがぼっきり折れた。

・A tree in the garden was snapped off by a severe typhoon.

はげしい台風で、庭の木がぼっきり折れた。

Dogmatic Opinion

I can’t think of “Bokkiri” except in connection with “break.”

Both “Bokkiri” and “Pokkiri” are “snap” in English,

but the image is that something a little thicker can be broken than something that can be broken by “Pokkiri” (branch, bone, cane, etc.).

Thickness is important. but in the end, “wood(tree, branch)” is the only and most important.

If a person’s bone can be broken so “Bokkiri”, then life itself is at stake.

It is interesting to note that it has nothing to do with “Bokki(erections),” but rather the opposite movement.

Proximate Expression

snap
